Although he was brought up in Northern Ireland between the ages of seven and 18, Dermot was actually born in Devon, and returned to England to attend the University of Sussex, from which he received a Master’s degree in history. Dermot went on to complete a post graduate qualification in journalism, and straight away put this to good use by working as a journalist for several local papers.
Dermot’s first job in television was as a researcher on Channel 4’s The Business Programme, and he later became a reporter for the same programme. After gaining four years’ experience in this area, Dermot moved to Switzerland, presenting the European Business Channel, before being asked to return to the UK to present the World News on Channel 4 Daily.
His next career move was to the BBC, where he presented the BBC’s flagship BBC Breakfast for 5 years, and during his time with the BBC he also anchored the Six O’clock and Ten O’clock bulletins. Showing his versatility, he also presented Treasure Hunt.
Dermot reported on some of the biggest news events of the past several decades - being the broadcaster entrusted to break the news to the nation that Diana, Princess of Wales had died. He also interviewed Peter Mandelson about a loan agreement that he claimed was legitimate – and following the probing interview, Mr Mandelson resigned the next day. Dermot subsequently won the Interviewer of the Year award.
When not at work, Dermot is an enthusiastic and committed cyclist and has completed a number of charity cycling events including Action Research’s End to End bike ride and the Verenti Dragon Ride, and works with Sky to promote cycling.
