Des was born in Zimbabwe in 1951 and was educated at Prince Edward School and the University of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe.) Des represented Rhodesia at cricket, field hockey and tennis. He also played for South Africa schools at cricket. He married Brenda Evans in 1978. They have three children – Nicola, Gareth and Stacey.

Des’ Dad, Bob Evans and his step-mother Sheila Evans (Dowdeswell) emigrated to the United States in 1980 and settled in Indianapolis. Sheila subsequently coached tennis at the Indianapolis Racquet Club for 26 years. Des emigrated to the States in 2000 and the family 2 years later, also settling in Carmel, Indianapolis. Des has coached tennis at the Indianapolis Racquet Club since February, 2000. He is also Head Coach of the boys and girls tennis teams at New Palestine High School.

Nicola, Gareth ans Stacey have subsequently graduated from university at either Purdue or IUPUI in Indiana. Nicola played 4 years college tennis for the Jaguars and all three children won Indiana State tennis titles with Carmel High School. Nicola is married to masters in business graduate Sean Frazer.

They have three children – Deklyn, Ella and Lleyton and currently live in Carmel, Indiana after spending two years working in Seattle. Gareth and Stacey also live and work in Indy. Gareth is married to Em - who is a teacher and is a triplet!
