Beginning to work for her Warroad, Minnesota-based family window and door business at a relatively young age, Desiree Marvin served as a sales associate before enrolling at Concordia College in Moorhead,, Minnesota. She remained involved with Marvin Windows and Doors for roughly half a year while at college, finding a practical outlet for her communications studies in technical publications. Desiree Marvin earned her bachelor of arts in business with a concentration in corporate communications in 2011.

She subsequently returned to her family business, which had shortened its name to simply Marvin. After serving 2 years as a purchasing assistant, she accepted relatively brief back-to-back tenures as a training/communications specialist and an instructional designer. In 2019, Marvin relocated from company offices in Roanoke, Virginia, to become a full-time company workspace researcher in Greater Washington, D.C. Her work centers on the creation of new workspace designs with a focus on enhancing productivity and creativity.
