Public Speaker in San Diego, California
Greetings and thanks for dropping by to see little 'ole me. My name is Devin C. Hughes and I am a former college basketball player, professional speaker, author and frequent eclectic thinker.
My moment of change came the day I graduated from Colgate University. On that summer afternoon in 1991, I sat frozen with regret: I knew without a doubt that I had squandered my greatest opportunity—an education.
I am the son of a black father and white mother, I grew up in a mixed—and mixed up—world. My home life was chaotic, riddled with my parents' drug use and unconventional ways of educating; dyslexia made academic learning a seemingly insurmountable challenge; and my identity was beyond confusing—was I black because I felt black or white because I looked white? I knew one thing: I needed to escape my environment and get into college, beyond which I believed the world would open up to him.
Basketball was my ticket to a brighter future, and I attended Colgate on a full athletic scholarship. Despite my determination to get to college, however, I scraped through the next four years by doing the bare minimum. Realizing how many doors I had closed for myself was crushing. The day I graduated, I knew he had to change.
I spent the next twenty years building a successful career in corporate America before transitioning to a more fulfilling vocation: motivating people to reach their full potential. After years of feeling isolated because of my mixed race and dyslexia, I now help others thrive in a fragmented world.
I speak at schools, universities, corporations, associations, and organizations in a wide variety of disciplines to help others access their potential for change.
I live in Southern CA with my wife and four daughters. My memoir, Contrast: A Biracial Man's Journey To Desegregate His Past, is my gift back to those who are looking for some inspiration and passion to move forward, not look back.
Feel free drop me a line, say hello or bust my chops! A great life is measured by ones progress not perfection and I am certainly a work in progress.
