"I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decision"- Stephen Covey
Devon Antwon Baldwin-Johnson likes to think of himself as a successful product or testimony of foster care. He is 21 years old and currently attends North Carolina Central University to obtain first a Bachelors of Social Work and then a Masters. His foster care background has really prepared him for his life work which pertains to him becoming a therapist for other foster care children. He feels that a lot of foster kids problems go unnoticed by the case team due to lack of comfort and attention shown by the foster parents, therapist, etc. Devon's first year at North Carolina Central University was back in 2012 and after only his freshman year he left school to enter the workforce, that route did not go as planned. He returned to North Carolina Central University in the spring of 2014 and has raised his GPA to a 2.8. He says his motivation for not only getting accepted to a college but finishing his degree program is his family. He has a close knit family both in foster care and his biological family. Devon says the system has taught him loyalty and respect among other things. His life occupation of being a therapist was actually first brought to his attention by his mother Angela who was once his social worker and now has started her own private practice along with her husband Corey. Devon hopes to work in their office upon graduating in 2017.
