Dhiman Chattopadhyay
University professor in Pennsylvania, USA
I am currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication, Journalism and Media, at Shippensburg University, where I teach courses in journalism and strategic communications. Prior to Ship, I taught at Lamar University, Texas, and at Bowling Green State University in Ohio (where I completed my Ph.D.).
Originally from India, my professional experience spans two decades as a reporter, bureau chief, and managing editor at newspapers, magazines and websites such as the Times of India, Mid-Day, Business Today, mid-day.com, 9.9 Media, and Asian Age. I have traveled extensively, interviewing global political leaders, reporting on natural disasters, international sporting meets, and lifestyle issues from over a dozen nations in Asia, Europe and Africa. I have led the editorial operations in some of India’s largest English language newsrooms.
My research is at the intersection of mass communication, digital media and social change. My academic work has been published in peer reviewed journals such as Asian Journal of Communication, Global Media & Communication, Journal of Graphic Novels & Comics, and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly and as several book chapters. I am currently involved in two separate grant-funded studies. The first is a Solutions Journalism project that focuses on making climate change reportage accessible and relevant to different audiences; The second is a Pennsylvania State System funded study that examines factors affecting trust in journalism among minority communities and groups. I am also writing a book (under contract with Palgrave-McMillan) on social media's impact on Indian journalism. In 2021 the Asian Pacific American Caucus/Division at National Communication Association recognized me with the ‘emerging scholar of the year’ award.
