Writing at the Speed of Light
The Cloud
I have always been a fast writer, but my speed is indicative of my lack of patience with the process. Writing feels like stopping for scenic views on a fast drive--it doesn't hold my interest. Instead, my inspiration for a substantial story comes to me quickly, like the thrill of taking a hair-pin curve a little too fast. I always feel like I have the potential to write awe-inspiring, amazing stories, but I never slow down long enough to see what roadkill I have left in my wake. I seem to write best when I force myself to write short stories. My writing style (if you can call it that) agrees with these diminutive blurbs more than a prolonged saga. I once managed to channel my creativity long enough to write a story that I am still quite proud of: “The Man in the Wind.” Otherwise, my ideas are like landmarks disappearing in the rearview mirror. Maybe if I can only learn to be a little less heavy-footed, I might just enjoy the view.
