Susan Myburgh
Adelaide, Australia
After a youth spent exploring intellectually (at university, doing an undergraduate degree in English and Art) and physically (travelling in Africa and Europe), I became an information professional - or librarian - or information scientist. The nomenclature is, to me, unimportant. I am from Cape Town, have studied or worked at tertiary education institutions in South Africa, United States, Europe and Australia. I live in Adelaide, Australia, and travel frequently, both intellectually (using ICTs) and physically, although I am more and more inclined towards the former than the latter these days.
I have spent most of my working life as an academic in the field of library and information science, or information management, whichever you prefer. I believe that libraries, archives, records management, museums and document management share many fundamental and essential characteristics and are all part of one information metacommunity. This metacommunity may share a great deal with the technical metacommunity (information systems, computer science and so forth) but they plough different fields.
Now I have decided to return to my roots, and run a shop, AfricanDesign, which focuses on contemporary African design. I am introducing African creatives to Australia.
