Digital Etiquette
Digital etiquette, or netiquette as its sometimes called, is a basic set of rules you should follow in order to make the internet better for others, and better for you. It's just as important to treat people with courtesy and respect online as it is in real life. When you instant message, chat, or email someone over the Internet, they can't see your face to tell if you're teasing them or saying something in jest. How do you practice good Netiquette? It's simple – just treat others as you want to be treated – with courtesy and respect. People know these rules but usually do not follow when using the Internet. This includes hacking others computer, downloading illegally, plagiarism and using bad language on the Internet. Not a lot of schools teach students how important it is to follow these rules that everyone knows. If all of us follow this it could make the Internet a better space to share and use. Sudies show that replying to emails and replying to IMs have different etiquette rules. If you don't reply right away it seems rude. I myself if I don't reply to a bbm right away, and especially if the other person saw that I read the bbm is very rude. Because you delibretley avoided them. The worst thing that has ever happened to me through bad etiquette, was someone hacked my facebook acount and it was someone I know because they wrote rumors about me that were'nt true and to this day I have no idea who it is. Hacking someone is just rude because you invade someones privacy, and cause harm to the person you hacked. There are also important points about email etiquette. If it's a business email keeping it stricly business and to the point. And you always have to distinguish between your spelling and vocabulary between your friends and teachers/ boss. You always have to make sure that your computers and usb are virus free because you wouldn't want to send someone a virus. And remember when writing an email make sure the write curteous words at the begining and end of every email. If you wish to become a good citizen of etiquette make sure you don't use bad language and pictures through social networks because it might not affect you at the moment but it can affect you in the future if your boss, or college admissions people see it, it might affect your chances of gettinmg in or getting accepted to a position without them seeing you. Be aware of everything you do on the internet because it's perminant.
