Dinah Becton-Consuegra

Born and raised in Chicago, Dinah has been an advocate and educational reform leader for historically disenfranchised students for 17 years. As the oldest and only daughter and a first generation college graduate, Dinah's passion is to empower youth of color to thrive through adversity. She began her career as an English/Film teacher in the Los Angeles Unified SchoolDistrict. There, she created two of the most successful small learning communities. She deeply believes in the capacity of all students to learn andhas created innovative programs for youth aimed at closing the achievement gap using: technology, music, to name a few.
For the last 10 years, she has served in various leadership capacities for districts and non-profits. She has worked with districts in California and Hawai'i advocating for Black and Latino youth impacted by the achievement gap. Her focus was on examining the systems that lead to educational inequities by uncovering data and convening focus groups to gain an understanding of equity and access across the instructional program. As an Executive Director of Family Engagement for San Francisco Unified School District, she developed and began implementation of a strategic plan for scaling up proven effective practices that shift the culture of partnerships with families and communities on a district wide level. She is CEO/Founder of Equity Revolution providing national consulting and coaching to non-profits, foundations, districts,principals, and teachers. Currently, she works for Expeditionary Learning where she focuses on best practices within project-based learning as they connect to: character education, deeper learning, and high quality student work. Her areas of expertise are: strategic partnerships, technology, closing the opportunity gap, organizational effectiveness, culturally responsive pedagogy, family/community engagement, and implementing cradle to career programs.
She graduated with honors in English & Comparative Literary Studies from Occidental College. She holds master's degrees from Claremont Graduate University in Secondary Teacher Education and Principal Leadership from the University of California, Los Angeles. Outside of leading a revolution to dramatically transform public schools, Dinah is an avid education blogger, urban farmer, dog lover, mid-century modern enthusiast, world traveler, poet, and all around weekend warrior.
