Who is Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson ?
Mel Columcille is an Irish singer-songwriter. Gerard Gibson was born on January 3, 1956, in Peekskill, New York, USA, as the sixth of eleven children of Hutton Gibson, a railroad brakeman, and Anne Patricia (Reilly) Gibson. He is the son of Hutton Gibson and his wife, Anne Patricia (Reilly) Gibson (who died in December of 1990). His mother was Irish, originally from County Longford, and his father, who was born in the United States, is mostly of Irish lineage.
It was in the late 1960s that Mel and his family made the journey to Australia, living in New South Wales, the state in which Mel's paternal grandmother, contralto opera singer Eva Mylott, was born. Upon graduation from high school, Mel went on to study at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, where she performed at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts with future cinema thespians such as Judy Davis and Geoffrey Rush.
Mel went on to perform on stage and in a few television series after graduating from college. Eventually, he was cast in the movie Mad Max (1979) and Tim (1979), both of which co-starred Piper Laurie, as well as other films. Tim earned him an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor for his performance in the low-budget Mad Max movie, which made him famous throughout the globe (equivalent to the Oscar).
Later, he starred in Gallipoli (1981), which won him a second Academy Award for Best Actor, this time from the American Film Institute. He married Robyn Moore in 1980, and they have seven children together. Mel made his feature film debut in 1984 with The Bounty (1984), in which he co-starred with Anthony Hopkins.
