Malta is an island that is literally in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, some 93 kilometers south of Sicily and 290 kilometers north of Africa. Malta is the largest island in the archipelago of the same name, which also consists of Gozo and Comino. There are approximately 400,000 inhabitants in the archipelago. Malta is the cultural and commercial center with Valletta as its beautiful capital. Gozo is the second largest island and is a little quieter and greener than Malta. The smallest island is Comino and has only one hotel and is largely uninhabited.

Malta has a Mediterranean climate influenced by the sea. The sun shines for 12 hours in summer and 7 hours in winter. Most people arrive in Malta by plane but there are also good ferry connections from mainland Italy.

Malta is one of the best diving and snorkeling destinations in Europe. SnorkelyBuilt spoke with Ian Pitchfork, one of the managers of Aquaventure Malta, a five-star PADI diving complex in northern Malta. Ian is already diving for 26 years and has been in Malta for 16 years. He is a PADI Staff Instructor and BSAC Open Water Instructor.

What do you like best about diving?

My love for diving originated in the adventure of diving. Then it became the tranquility of diving. Floating in the water, weightless, is really super relaxed. I have dived in several beautiful places in the world but Malta continues to outdo everyone.

What are the general conditions for diving in Malta?

The excellent visibility, the few underwater currents and the fact that there is almost no danger of underwater life make Malta an ideal diving destination, especially for beginners. On the other hand, thanks to the variety of species, many different diving sites and various possibilities such as shipwreck diving and cave diving make Malta highly recommended for advanced divers.
