So I’m Ant Christou, I DJ under the name Skant, it’s my nickname back home, not really sure why but it’s been that way for years so I thought I’d stick with it! I’ve been DJing since I was around 18 so about 5 years now, My musical influences are very wide ranging, you’ll find me listening to everything from Toploaders Dancing In The Moonlight all the way through to Slipknots Duality! Before I started DJing I was very much a heavy metal kid, my only electronic influence was pendulum although they were touching on a more rock laced sound at that time.
When I was around 17/18 though I started living with my friend Busby who introduced me to Dubstep, particularly the sounds of Caspa, I had never heard anything like it! I fell in love with the genre and even now as a mainly drum and bass Dj, it remains my first musical love as a DJ. Busby aswell was the first to introduce me to DJing when he brought home a Hercules DJ controller for his laptop. I became obsessed with learning to mix tracks, spending hours forcing everyone to listen to me clanging tracks together! looking back I had no concept of the idea of DJing but it still engrossed me and became an obsession. A year or so later in life, due to me at this time having my own flat which was essentially a party house for me and my friends, my other friend Ben left his club standard set up at mine indefinitely. This is when I began to improve and gradually started to understand the concepts of DJing, I started beatmatching tracks properly and started finding the tracks which appealed to me. At this time I started falling in love with drum and bass, it maintained the heaviness of dubstep but its faster paced more chaotic beats appealed to my attitudes and I found myself regularly hitting drum n bass and jungle raves.
A year or so later I finally got my own decks (theyre expensive so it took a while!) and started mixing drum and bass aswell to further challenge myself, its speed and different beat structure gave my mixing a whole new level of challenge. I started djing at house parties around my area aswell to get eh taste of playing to a crowd.
Through the DJ society at uni I got my first set at a dnb night, from there I continued getting gigs and secured myself a slot as resident DJ at suki 10c every thursday night.
