I'm Robert Van Liew, known on stage as DJ DX. I'm a turntablist, songwriter, and producer from Jersey City, New Jersey, with more than 25 years behind the decks.
I started out as DJ Double X and took on the DJ DX name in 1998, building a following through local and regional blend mixtapes. In 2007 I moved into Latin music with "Hood Reggaeton," crossing into reggaeton and Spanish-language production as a Black American producer, and I've since performed across Latin America as El Negro. I perform bilingually in English and Spanish.
Over the years I've released a run of mixtapes, including work built around Ciara's "Pretty Girl Swag," the Kingpen series, Lost and Found, Forever Alive, and "Queen Nicki" featuring Nicki Minaj. Alongside fellow turntablist and producer DJ Madden, I've put out studio albums including The Unfortunate Child and Made From Scratch. My original catalog runs across singles like Finally Moving, Wait For Me, and Beyond Your Mind, with a wider body of work distributed worldwide. My track "Twerk It" has passed 3.7 million views on YouTube through ONErpm.
More recently, my project Soul Shades with Julie Schatz went viral, drawing more than 10 million combined streams off our remix of "I Only Smoke When I Drink" built around Sting's "Englishman in New York."
My work has been featured by TED, TEDx, Disrupt Magazine, and NJ.com.
