David Nicholls

David Nicholls is an Associate Professor in physiotherapist, lecturer and researcher at AUT University in Auckland, New Zealand.
He trained at the Wolverhampton School of Physiotherapy, graduating in 1988 and worked at New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton and The Childrens' Hospital in Birmingham before taking up a lecturing position at Sheffield Hallam University in 1994.
David emigrated to New Zealand with his family in May 2000 to take up a senior lecturer position at AUT where he is now an Associate Professor in the Physiotherapy Department.
David completed his Master of Arts in Research Methodology in Birmingham, UK in 1992 and a PhD title 'Body politics: A Foucauldian discourse analysis of physiotherapy practice' at the University of South Australia in 2008.
David has published 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, 13 book chapters, more than 40 non peer-reviewed articles and has presented and lectured in Canada, USA, England, Norway, Australia and New Zealand.
He was until recently a member of the National Executive of Physiotherapy New Zealand and founding chair of the Physiotherapy Education Group and the New Zealand Physiotherapy History Working Group.
David is the founder and chair of the Critical Physiotherapy Network (www.criticalphysio.me) which has more than 230 members in 28 countries around the world.
David is currently working on a number of research projects, including a history of 19th century physical therapies in New Zealand, an extensive study of the Rest Cure and the management of neurasthenia by nurse/physiotherapists. And he is currently writing a book titled 'The End of Physiotherapy' to be published in 2016.
