ACS publishes guidelines to educate people on cancer. For men, the association recognizes prostate cancer as the second most common type affecting them, behind skin cancer. Knowing about this cancer can help men prevent it, or at the very least catch it early.

The risk of developing prostate cancer goes up with age. In fact, most men diagnosed with this condition are 65 and older. Besides age, race is another factor, with African American and Caribbean men being at higher risk for the disease. Having a close relative who developed the cancer also raises a person’s risk. Men should undergo regular prostate cancer screenings after age 50. Those with a higher risk (because of race or genetics) should have regular screenings beginning as early as age 40.

Screening is done using a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test. A digital rectal exam can also be performed. How often a person should undergo screening will depend on his PSA level and overall health.
