Over the past 3 decades, Steve has worked in editorial and business-side design, leadership and innovation roles at Gannett/USA TODAY Network, GateHouse Media’s Center for News & Design, the Austin American-Statesman and Cox Media Group, and the Detroit Free Press and Detroit Newspapers (michigan.com) for Knight Ridder and Gannett.
Steve has been an event organizer, visiting faculty member, guest lecturer, and international speaker at various conferences and events from Paris to Argentina, Mexico City to Dubai, and Pamplona to Hangzhou (China). He served on the INMA North America board and the Society for News Design executive committee.
Trivia: Steve once worked for the smallest of three remaining JOA (federally protected newspaper joint operating agreement) -- the York (PA) Daily Record -- before finding his way to Detroit, the largest.
Honors include: the Society for News Design’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2015); the Ball State Anton Majeri Award for Innovation and Leadership in Graphic Journalism (2015); Pulitzer Prize for local reporting, 2008 (member of the editing/presentation team), for coverage of the text message scandal that led to the resignation and conviction of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick; Detroit Free Press named one of SND World’s Best Designed, (finalist, 2000); Lexington Herald-Leader named one of SND World’s Best Designed, (winner, 1999). More than 100 awards from Society for News Design and others.
