Doug Chinnery
UK
“Doug has been described as a ‘pivotal artist who has redefined the creative photographic landscape’”.
I am primarily influenced by and draw inspiration from Abstract Expressionist painters such as Hodgkin, Feiler, Rae and Ryman. My gestural work eschews topography, aiming to distil the landscape's rhythm, rhyme and flow through poetic visual expressions.
With the camera as my principal medium, mirroring my painted mixed media abstracts, I attempt to create intuitive abstracted works which layer texture, colour and form to create a deeply emotional and expressive response to the natural and built environment.
Much of my time is devoted to teaching, especially through our online and app-based creative photography community at fyv.art - I have a passion for creative thinking and relish encouraging students worldwide to discover their own unique artistic voice.
I have exhibited widely in the UK and overseas, being in demand as a public speaker, have taught at the Bradford College of Art and my first book, ‘Abstract Mindedness’ has now sold out.
When not making art, I derive great pleasure from making (rather poor) furniture and spending time with my wife, Beth and our two exuberant dogs, Eddie and Lily.
