A LETTER TO DANTE & ROBERT FROST

—i.m. Patrick Cullinan, 1933-2011

.

It remains unclear as to whether or not

there's any way out of the forest;

which is why, I suppose, that whenever I meet

others walking among the trees

they always seem as lost as me.

.

Some are old, yet seem so young;

some are young, yet weave their years

as if they carried all the world.

Some say that wandering's all they've known;

for some, their wandering's just begun.

.

Each time I find a path, I hope

for fields that slope towards a beach,

a sea that ends in clouds and sky,

the promise of an open reach,

the friendship of an open fire.

.

And yet the trail keeps going cold,

it leads to where I've crossed before.

Where each path ends, another begins,

and all that's left to us it seems

is going on from where we've been.
