Dr. Angela Marie Carol MD, CCFP, FCFP is a family physician with the goal of treating chronic illnesses, particularly chronic pain, mental illness and addiction. She is able to confront the opioid crisis multidimensionally due to her former experience as a medical advisor with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, assistant clinical professor of family medicine on the faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University and as lead physician at Hamilton Urban Core Community Health Centre.

Her efforts to mitigate the opioid crisis include harm reduction strategies like opioid replacement therapy, safer opioid supply, distribution of naloxone, safe needle exchange, and more educated and effective opioid prescribing.

She practices medicine in a Community Health Centre (CHC) in Hamilton’s Code Red Zone, where the life expectancy of the population is twenty years less than elsewhere in the city. Her background as a social worker and child and youth worker fostered a sensitivity and prioritization of needs for the most vulnerable populations. Her intention has always been to advocate for patients and break down barriers that prevent access to care.

Dr. Carol is also an educator. She supports and guides a student-run health care clinic within her CHC. She has also assisted with knowledge translation education models and tools for prescribers and educators and has functioned as an informed source on opioids and pain management for a number of committees.

She was instrumental in supporting the development of Canada’s first guideline on the Safe and Effective Prescribing of Opioids by working closely with the National Opioid Use Guideline Group (NOUGG), which was made up of all the Medical Regulatory Authorizes in Canada and supported by the Canadian Federation (FMRAC).

Dr. Carol is co-chair of the Canadian Pain Care Forum, a member of the National Faculty on Patient and Public Education for the Michael DeGroote National Pain Centre and a member of Health Canada’s Expert Advisory Group for Safer Opioid Supply and has served on the Medical Legal Society of Hamilton Board of Directors for the past three years.
