Book description:

How can we stop repeating self-destructive behaviour if we don't even know we are doing it?
This book is for those of us adults who are struggling with the fallout from an abusive childhood.
Do you feel you are a failure in life?
Do you struggle with personal relationships?
Do you lack confidence?
Do you hate yourself?
Do you feel your life is just a series of disasters and you keep making the same mistakes?
When we were children, living with abuse became our 'normal'. As adults, we are subconsciously programmed to repeat the abuse because we gravitate to what feels 'normal'. By doing this, we re-victimise ourselves, as we recreate the abuse we suffered as children. Therefore, our childhood is not over just because we are adults. This book shows us how we can stop this detrimental behaviour pattern. It gives adults from abusive childhoods hope that their adult lives can be free from more abuse.
While we will never forget the abuse we suffered as children, we can stop ourselves from repeating it in our adult lives. To do this, we owe it to ourselves to stop blaming others for all our failures. We need to admit the part we play in these failures.
By learning about 'Repetition Compulsion', a subconscious drive, we can begin to understand how we contribute to making the same mistakes again and again. This book offers a new way of living, one where we adults are in control and not our subconscious minds. As part of the process of learning about 'Repetition Compulsion', we also begin to love and respect ourselves; something we were not taught to do as children. We are finally able to stop recreating the abuse we suffered as children. We are then able to forgive ourselves for our failures and bad choices because they were out of our control. We begin to see we actually did really well, considering the emotional handicaps we carried from our abusive childhoods. We begin to feel we are safe and we matter and are worthy of love and respect from not only others, but also from ourselves. We are at last able to stop the self-loathing and replace it with self-love and self-respect.
For any adult who is trying to 'get over' their abusive childhood, this short book is a pocket companion aide to better days ahead.

Dr. Annette Hunter

MB MSOM Dip Sports Med FFSEM PhD

Dr. Hunter is the author of the self-help book 'Your Childhood Is Over — No It’s Not! Tales of Repetition Compulsion'.

In her early years, Dr. Hunter was an Irish Champion in Artistic Gymnastics and an Irish provincial competitive swimmer. She continued classical ballet into her late thirties.

In Limerick, Ireland, she set up her private practice in Sports and Exercise Medicine, where she dealt with athletes in all sports, from recreational to elite level. However, she had to retire early from her medical career when she developed neuropathic pain, secondary to endometriosis adhesions. While Dr. Hunter achieved professional success, her personal life was a catalogue of disasters. While it would be easy to blame others for all these disasters, Dr. Hunter realised that she too, had a part to play in these disasters happening to her. She had to admit to herself that she kept making the same mistakes. This admission led her to explore the concept of ‘Repetition Compulsion’ and how it affected her life. She was then inspired to write this book to help others understand the concept of ‘Repetition Compulsion’ and help them see that, they too, may be repeating the same destructive patterns. The book includes examples of her own experiences and the experiences of others. She describes all these experiences by using the fictional character named Eva, in order to protect identities.

These days, Dr. Hunter gives public talks and media interviews.
