Dr. Fritz Baumgartner, MD

Cardiothoracic Surgeon Educator and Medical Ethi in California, USA

I am a cardiothoracic surgeon, educator, and scholar dedicated to caring for patients with skill, integrity, and compassion. My path into medicine began early in life, shaped by immigrant parents who taught me the values of faith, hard work, and service. After graduating Summa Cum Laude in Biology from Loyola Marymount University, where I received the Karl Kadner Biology Award, I earned my MD from UCLA School of Medicine. I completed my general surgery residency at Harbor-UCLA and a cardiothoracic fellowship at the University of British Columbia.

Throughout my career, I have treated complex heart and lung disease, led surgical teams, and served as Acting Head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. I have also directed thoracoscopic surgery instruction within the VA system and trained residents, fellows, and physician assistants, receiving the Preceptor of the Year Award in 2022.

Beyond the operating room, I write and speak about the Hippocratic Oath, medical ethics, and the relationship between faith and science. I believe medicine is a calling rooted in service. The purpose is simple: care for the patient and never lose sight of that responsibility.
