Dr Richard Matthews PhD GradDipBA BE(Hons) is Principal Expert at RHEM Labs Pty Ltd, an Australian forensic technology company whose mission is to develop and deploy new forensic paradigms at scale.
His work focuses on the forensic interpretation of digital evidence and imagery, particularly sensor pattern noise, camera attribution, synthetic media, image provenance and the distinction between imagery originating from physical camera systems and imagery produced or manipulated computationally. He completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide with the thesis Towards a Unified Theory of Sensor Pattern Noise: an analysis of dark current, lens effects and temperature bias in CMOS Image Sensors. His doctoral research examined the physical and statistical mechanisms underlying sensor pattern noise and their application to forensic identification.
That research subsequently formed the technical foundation for SPOT — Sensor Pattern Origin Testing — a sovereign Australian image-assurance capability developed by RHEM Labs. SPOT applies statistical characteristics derived from image sensors to support rapid assessment of whether imagery is consistent with acquisition by a physical camera, providing an independent approach to image-origin assurance alongside conventional synthetic-media and deepfake detection methods. The capability has been developed through peer-reviewed research, repeated experimental testing and engagement with key forensic, law-enforcement and international stakeholders.
Dr Matthews also undertakes forensic casework involving complex and contested digital evidence. His experience spans matters ranging from terrorism offences and murder investigations through to child exploitation material cases, child custody disputes and civil fraud. His work includes the examination and interpretation of Windows artefacts, metadata, file-system evidence, digital imagery, user activity and other digital traces, as well as reviewing the technical basis of investigative and prosecution conclusions. A significant part of his practice involves translating complex forensic findings into evidence that can be understood and tested by investigators, legal practitioners, decision-makers and courts.
His broader research and capability-development work increasingly examines how image assurance and forensic methods can operate beyond conventional casework, particularly within intelligence, information warfare and contested information environments. This includes the role of image-origin assurance in reducing uncertainty, supporting decision advantage, strengthening the integrity of intelligence products and contributing to deterrence and asymmetric advantage where adversaries seek to manipulate or manufacture visual information.
Before specialising in digital forensics, Dr Matthews worked across Defence, automotive manufacturing, engineering, infrastructure and entertainment operations. He studied at the Australian Defence Force Academy and served in the Australian Defence Force. Following Defence, he established and operated an entertainment services business before moving into engineering roles with GM Holden and subsequently into power monitoring, industrial automation and water-quality systems.
This combination of Defence experience, engineering, operational systems, forensic science and applied research has shaped his systems-level approach to technical problems. Rather than treating cybersecurity, digital forensics, forensic science and information integrity as isolated disciplines, his work concentrates on the interaction between physical systems, digital evidence, information flows and the decisions that depend upon them.
Dr Matthews has been, or is, a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Engineers Australia, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society. He has presented his work through academic, professional and public forums, including TEDx, and has published across digital forensics, image sensor analysis and other areas of applied technology.
