Dr Abdul Rao

An internationally renowned medical researcher, Dr. Abdul Rao completed his medical education and residency in Pakistan. He remained in his country of origin as a clinical instructor at the Dow Medical University and The Aga Khan University School of Medicine, later relocating to the United States in 1987 to continue his medical education. In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Abdul Rao received further postdoctoral training from the Boston University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and Oxford University John Radcliffe Hospital. In addition, he completed tertiary education in executive management at the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz School of Business.
Applying his broad background in medical research and governance, Dr. Abdul Rao transitioned from bedside care to health care administration and joined the University of Pittsburgh Thomas E. Starlz Transplantation Institute as a director and chief in 1994. He has guided research activities at leading academic medical centers for more than two decades, publishing more than 175 articles and presenting over 100 lectures throughout his career. He joined Ochsner Health System in 2011, where he continues to serve as system vice president for research, vice president of the Middle Eastern region, and deputy head of schools, research division, at the Ochsner Clinical School.
