Dr Alfonso Lopez Cardona

Dr. Alfonso Lopez Cardona, a licensed psychiatrist practicing in Virginia, maintains certification with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Experienced in treating patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, he continuously enriches his contributions to the field through memberships in the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Alfonso Lopez Cardona currently assists patients at Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center in Portsmouth in the role of Medical Director. Alongside his professional responsibilities at Harbor Point, he maintains a psychiatric post at Williamsburg Psychiatry.

Dr. Alfonso Lopez Cardona began his medical studies in South America, earning his MD at Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario in Colombia. He received training in psychiatry at Universidad del Valle Facultad de Medicina, also in Colombia. After studying English at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), he completed additional resident training in psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, and a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in Baltimore, Maryland. His professional psychiatric experience began in 1993 when he established a private psychiatry practice in Cali, Colombia.

After his post-doctoral training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lopez Cardona found placement with the Family Living Institute, where he practiced child, adolescent, and general psychiatry. He additionally accepted a position as Medical Director on the Crawford campus of The Pines Residential Treatment Center and continued as a Medical Director at Harbor Point Behavioral Health Center. He left the Family Living Institute in 2011 to accept his current positions. Prior to developing his professional interest in psychiatry, he practiced medicine as a General Physician in Cali, Colombia.
