Dr. Bonnie Richardson
nephrologist and internist in Regina, Saskatchewan
I’m Dr. Bonnie Richardson, a nephrologist and internist based in Regina, Saskatchewan. My medical career started with a diploma in psychiatric nursing, followed by a degree in nursing, then medicine. Early on, I was interested in challenging medical problems and the chance to make a real difference in patients’ lives, especially people with chronic kidney disease.
Today, I’m an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan and a nephrologist with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. Throughout my career, I have had the chance to step into leadership roles that have enabled me to shape care at the individual and system level. I’ve served as Area Lead for the Department of Medicine in Regina, Physician Dyad Leader, and Physician Lead for the Hemodialysis and Plasma Exchange Programs. I'm also involved with the development and implementation of the Red Cell Exchange Program in Regina.
One of my passions is Indigenous health. I run outreach clinics and have researched chronic kidney disease and diabetes in Indigenous communities. This work is close to my heart as these projects are based on respect, collaboration, and the desire to improve care in culturally relevant ways. Being honoured by the Touchwood Agency Tribal Council and Wellness Wheel remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
Education is another area that I care deeply about. I’ve coordinated nephrology and internal medicine residency programs, contributed to postgraduate curriculum development, and served on national committees with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. I have won several teaching awards over the years and have always found great joy in teaching residents and medical students.
Clinically, my practice includes both general internal medicine and nephrology. I have special interests in kidney disease during pregnancy, rare metabolic and hereditary conditions, and therapeutic plasma exchange. I cover a wide range of care, including intensive care, nephrology, and interventional procedures. I run busy inpatient and outpatient schedules in multiple hospitals and dialysis units in southern Saskatchewan.
My main focuses are prevention, equity, and compassionate care. I believe that strong relationships, thoughtful leadership, and a commitment to continuous learning help us move healthcare forward.
