While active with the Navy, he contributed to Operation Deep Freeze, working for three-month intervals in Antarctica. From 1987 to 1991, Dr. Dale Crum performed a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He subsequently joined Kaiser Permanente in West Anaheim, California as a Staff Surgeon in the Maxillofacial Department.
