Drew McGowan
Marketing and Communications in Oakland, California
I love building purpose-driven campaigns that connect companies and brands with consumers' and employees' hearts and minds. I bring a unique perspective to marketing stemming from a diverse career path including corporate, agency, nonprofit, and government organizations. With 25+ years communications, branding, & marketing experience, I have a proven track record with integrated marketing communications campaigns including storytelling, paid media strategy, earned media, entertainment marketing & branded content, sponsorships, digital/social media, event management, & cause marketing.
I currently serve as the Board Chair for the nonprofit Naturally Bay Area. Most recently, I was the Director of Corp Comms at Del Monte Foods. Prior, I was Head of Comms, Digital, & Design at Mezzetta. Previously, I led Comms and Influencer Strategy at Clif Bar & Company. Before joining Clif, I had a blood infection which led to open heart surgery to replace two infected heart valves. I decided I needed to step back and prioritize and started my consulting business (Open Heart Marketing & Communications) to help new and old brands grow. I focused on strategic partnerships, relationships, influencers, business development, public relations, social media, & events.
I served as VP of Marketing for Pit Barrel Cooker, Growth Development Officer for BRAND U Events, and marketing consultant for e.l.f. Cosmetics and Masterclass.
Previously, I served as Director of Partnerships at Another Planet Entertainment (www.apeconcerts.com) where I worked to bring brands together with the power of music through APE's iconic music venues and festivals. Prior to APE, I directed the Clorox Company's Entertainment Marketing team.
I led many of Clorox's most successful partnerships including the Brita FilterForGood campaign where we teamed with musicians (Dave Matthews Band, U2 Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, J.Cole, and Zac Brown Band) to green their tours and encourage fans to make the change at home. I also helped the Sundance Film Festival and NBC’s The Biggest Loser go bottled-water free as well as creating a documentary Music Sustainshighlighting the greening of the music industry.
Prior I worked on the agency side and helped start a nonprofit. I live in (and love) Oakland along with my wife, sons, and a rowdy dog named Rowdy.
