Myles Hokama, DDS

Vacaville, Ca

After 37 years in the dental field, it feels like my profession is my biography. Wife, child, grandchildren are easily forgotton when composing a Myles Hokama biography. I suspect that is only natural and perhaps appropriate.

I am a dentist in private practice which barely beats out being an accounant as a profession that kids do not romantically dream to be when they grow up. I, on the other hand, wanted to be a dentist since I was 5 years old. Whatever that says about me, I am settled and happy in the eve of my life.

Disputably, my career has been unusually different and uniquely interesting in comparison to my colleagues. Here comes the list so hang in there:

  • Dental Assistant in the Air Force first stationed at Incerlik, Turkey. We would visit the Turkish prison monthly to treat US citizens (Midnight Express) who were unfortunate enough to be caught and convicted in Turkey. Later I was stationed at Andrews AFB (home of Air Force 1). Being stationed there, I was on the forensic identification team for the Jonestown Mass Suicide, 900 bodies, Jimmy Jones, largest mass suicide in history.
  • Cosmetic practice outside Washington DC.
  • Lecturer on practice management and smile design
  • Vice President for Coaching Solutions consulting firm
  • Transition Consultant for AFTCO: brokering practice sales
  • Moved to California: Director of Professional Services for Accesss Dental Centers. Supervised 50 dentists: established treatment protocol, monitored quality control, mediated patient complaints and organized training of dentists.
  • Certified expert witness in Maryland and Virginia

Born and raised on the "World's Largest Pineapple Plantation", the island of Lana'i. It is the sixth largest of the Hawaiian Islands and currently 98% owned by Oracle's Larry Ellison. My graduating class totaled 39, one of the largest graduating classes ever on the island. Population was 2800 people who lived in a one mile square called Lana'i City.

Never in my wildest nor biggest imagination did I envision experiencing all that I have experienced and cultivating the expertise and perspectives that I have.
