Find yourself a physical therapist who can do Michael Jackson's moonwalk, and tell you which muscles are needed to pull off the move — the soleus, gastrocnemius, hamstrings, and quadriceps, if you were wondering — and you've got yourself a winner.
I'm Dr. JPop, Dr. Jennifer Hutton in professional settings, and I'm what one might call a "body detective." I take a holistic view of the body, not merely treating the symptoms, in my approach to therapy. I'm relentless, I'm steady, some (ahem...my husband, Armand) might even say I'm a bit stubborn and bullheaded.
But you want a physical therapist who's determined. Because when the body chooses to respond to some exercises and not others, or when traditional therapy solutions just aren't cutting it, you want a therapist who won't give up.
My Reason Why
My cousin, Devin, was born with developmental delays and his family was told by doctors he'd be wheelchair bound for the rest of his life. Not if Devon's mom, my aunt, Marsha, had anything to do with it.
It was my aunt's determination that got me interested in physical therapy. It was hard to watch. Everything was difficult for him, but the therapist found a way to make therapy intriguing. It made such a difference in his life. In therapy, he learned what it means to fight.
Seeing Devon overcome challenge after challenge inspired me. I left behind dreams of entering med school and went on to graduate from the physical therapy program at Loma Linda University in 2008. I later went to work in an orthopedic clinic for two years before moving onto pediatric physical therapy. I recently received a specialization in Myodetox.
Prehab vs. Rehab
Today, you'll find me working with all types of patients and clients with varying degrees of mobility, from amputees to athletes.
My approach to physical therapy is a bit progressive. In school, we weren't taught to look at the whole body. Now, physical therapists are seeing more returning patients, especially young people, with adult diagnoses, such as low back pain.
When people work with me, I don't just treat what's bothering them. I give my patients and clients ways to improve their functional movement patterns to help them move painlessly in their everyday lives.
If you need help moving and feeling better or want to chat about traveling (So far, I've been to Hawaii, London, and South Africa among others), dancing (twerk/urban style), and eating good food (burgers, pizza, and crepes are my faves), let's connect!
