Chicago, Illinois, United States
I'm a freelance writer in Chicago, and enjoy writing about history, sports, coaching, science and the places where those intersect. I've been a professional journalist for more than two decades, including several years as a staff reporter for The Associated Press. I was also the inaugural executive editor of the News Service of Florida, and I'm the creator and author of two editions of the Political Almanac of Florida.
Lately I've written several athlete profiles for TeamUSA.org, and covered soccer for web sites and newspapers, with work appearing in several print and online publications. I also continue to cover health care business topics for publications that include, most recently, Modern Healthcare Magazine.
Before joining the News Service in 2008, I spent 10 years in the Tallahassee bureau of The Associated Press, covering a wide range of Capitol news including the presidential recount of 2000, along with 10 regular sessions of the Legislature and numerous special sessions. As an AP reporter, I also covered my share of hurricanes and other disasters, crime, and even professional and college sports. I've also worked as a full time staffer for AP in Miami and Louisville as well as for newspapers and radio stations.
I'm a graduate of The College of Wooster in Ohio, I have a master's in journalism from The University of Missouri. My interests include all sports, the science of sports and training, science in general, education, demography, history, urban planning and too many other things to list in a short bio.
I've also spent several years coaching and playing soccer and competing in and teaching judo. I'm a native of Louisville, Ky., and a die-hard University of Louisville Cardinals fan. I live in Chicago with my wife Jessi, who is a researcher at DePaul University, and my son, one good dog and one badly behaved dog.
