Dr. Paul Matz

Dr. Paul Matz is a Partner with the Brain and Spine Center of St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, Missouri, outside St. Louis. In addition to this position, Dr. Matz enjoys staff medical privileges at Progress West HealthCare Center and Missouri Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Paul Matz moved to St. Louis in 2009.

Before joining the Brain and Spine Center, Dr. Matz, an accomplished neurosurgeon, served as Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. While there, he maintained staff privileges at the local VA Medical Center and courtesy staff privileges at Medical West in Bessemer, Alabama.

A graduate of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1992, Paul G. Matz, MD, continued his postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco. He first served as a Surgical Intern from 1992 to 1993, before becoming a Resident in the Department of Neurological Surgery over the next four years. In 1997, Dr. Matz became Chief Resident there.

Dr. Matz has participated in a number of grants, including a study, completed in 2009, on the delayed effect of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) on patients’ ability to make cognitive decisions. The same year, he completed work with a group of researchers conducting multi-center clinical trials and observational studies on patients with TBI.

Paul G. Matz, MD is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Matz is an Associate Editorial Board Member for Neurosurgery amd the Spine Journal. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for the periodical, Stroke, Spine, Critical Care Medicine. He supports the work of Doctors Without Borders, the American Hospice Foundation, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
