Dr. Robert Eppley

Dr. Robert Eppley has spent the last eight years as the President of California Sports and Orthopaedic Institute, Inc. In 2012, the Berkeley-based practice was honored with the Talk of the Town Customer Satisfaction Award by Celebration Media US.

Board certified in sports medicine and orthopedic surgery, Dr. Robert Eppley performs both arthroscopic and open procedures. Much of his work corrects conditions affecting the knees or shoulders. Dr. Robert Eppley surgically reconstructs patellar and anterior cruciate ligaments, corrects microfractures, performs partial and total replacements of shoulders and knees. He also repairs tears and injuries to the meniscus and rotator cuff tendons. All told, he performs approximately 600 surgeries annually.

Born in Boston, Robert Eppley, MD, was educated at Yale University and Swarthmore College. He earned a medical degree, with honors, from Case Western Reserve University. He remained at the University to undertake a yearlong internship in general surgery.

Over the next six years, Dr. Robert Eppley completed surgical and orthopedic residencies at Harvard University and Tufts University. He trained at the New England Baptist Hospital and studied at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute, home to the area's premier arthroscopic surgery program.

Between 1990 and 2004, Robert Eppley, MD, worked in a private practice at the Berkeley Orthopaedic Medical Group. Before this, he assisted team physicians affiliated with the Boston Celtics, New England Patriots, and three college programs. Since 1992, he has provided orthopedic surgical care for the athletic programs at the University of California: Berkeley, and was appointed Chief of Orthopaedics for the CAL Student Health Services in 2000.

Dr. Robert Eppley sits on the Board of the Alta Bates Summit Surgery Center. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Arthroscopy Association of North America, among other professional organizations.
