Dr Robert Ryan is a talented scientist known for his contributions to anti-bacterial research. This role allows him to highlight his expertise in biology and infectious disease.

A natural academic, researcher and scientist, Dr Ryan easily made the journey through undergraduate school - where he attained a B.Sc. in Microbiology and Biochemistry from the Institute of Technology, Carlow - up through the ranks. Dr Ryan completed his master’s degree in Bioinformatics and Biotechnology and completed his Ph.D. in 2004 in Microbial genetics. Following the completion of his studies, Dr Ryan held several research posts at distinguished universities. In these roles, Dr Ryan performed experiments and investigations, published his findings, oversaw the work and research of other researchers and students, and also contributed to anti-bacterial research. Just two of the important universities where he worked include the University of Oxford in the UK and Dartmouth Medical School in the USA.

Due to the extraordinary nature of Dr Ryan’s work, many organisations have chosen to honour him with an award. His most recent awards include the ASM Young Ambassador award from the USA, which Dr Ryan received in 2015, the Lister Prize Research Fellowship award in the UK in 2014, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh Patrick Neill Medal, also in the UK in 2014.

Dr Ryan continues to relate to the scientific community through his memberships to several influential groups, such the Genetics Society (UK), the Biochemical Society (UK) and the Editorial Board at Frontiers in Biology, among others.

Aside from his scientific endeavours, Dr Ryan enjoys pursuing his many other interests such as reading, film, photography and astronomy. Another important element of Dr Ryan’s life is being a scout leader and spending time in the outdoors. Dr Ryan enjoys hiking, cycling, swimming and playing football on a regular basis.
