Dr. Sammie I. Long is not only a doctor but also a poet. A radiologist by training, Dr. Long has always had a passion for poetry and managed to keep writing and publishing throughout years of rigorous education and demanding professional work. Her work as a radiologist has also influenced her poetry. Both the National and International Libraries of Poetry have honored Dr. Sammie I. Long with the Editor’s Choice Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry.

Much of Dr. Sammie I. Long’s poetry appears in the National and International Libraries of Poetry. Some titles of these poems include “Brothers Keepers,” “Paradox at the Park: A Poem for Children,” and “Growing Young.” Dr. Long’s interest in children and education led her to write “Daffodils and Other Instructive Poems for Children.” (It is not yet published.) In addition to the National and International Libraries of Poetry, her poems have been included in The Best Poems of 1997 and The Best Poems of 1998.

Although Dr. Sammie I. Long devotes much of her free time to poetry, her medical work is never far from her mind. In between poems, she contemplates doing research on an astonishing array of interests. She is interested in developing non-animal test subjects that can be used to teach Interventional Radiology. She is exploring the benefits of establishing a cancer registry and high-risk registry clinic for select populations. Whatever Dr. Long chooses to study, it will be sure to include her unique worldview as a doctor-poet.
