Dr. Samuel Otene
Radiation and Clinical Oncologist
Dr Otene, Samuel Anaja was born on March 30, 1974 in Kaduna. He was the third of seven children, from Otukpo, Benue State.
He studied Medicine at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1996 (MBBS). In 2007,he was the Pioneer Resident in Radiation and Clinical Oncology at ABUTH, Zaria, obtaining his Fellowship in Radiation and Clinical Oncology in May 2012. He did a Postgraduate Diploma in Management at Benue State University (2018-2019 set),and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programme (2020-2022 Set) in the same Institution.
Current Roles: Dr. Otene is a Resident Oncologist at ASI Ukpo Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Calabar, Cross River State, and Senior Lecturer at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State. Until recently, he was the only Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist in Benue State, working at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi since 2012, heading the Department of Oncology and Palliative Care in that institution. He is also a Visiting Consultant to Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), and lectures medical students of the College of Health Sciences (CHS), Benue State University.
Awards and Prizes: He has won multiple awards in the course of his eventful career, including the coveted Arthur-Anderson Consulting Award for Best 100 Level Student in ABU, Zaria (1997), Best Pre-Clinical Medical Student for 1996/97 and 1997/98 sessions in ABU, Zaria, Best in Part One ( Radiology), West African College of Surgeons (WACS) (April, 2010) and Best in National Postgraduate College of Medicine (Radiology) Part Two (May, 2012). He was the Excellence Award Prize Winner, S. B. Lagundoye Prize for Best Candidate in Part II FMCR Dissertation, May 2012.
Leadership: He was President of the Rotaract Club of ABUTH, Chief Resident, Department of Oncology, ABUTH Zaria from 2007 to 2012. He was State Chairman of NMA, Benue State from 2020-2022. He is currently the Chairman, NMA National Committee on Cancer Awareness, Prevention and Treatment Guidelines. He was National President of the Hospice and Palliative Care Association of Nigeria (HPCAN), from 2015 – 2019; He has been a member of several national Ministerial Committees on Cancer and Palliative Care. Currently, he is an active member of Nigeria’s Technical Working Committee on Cancer Control.
Family: He is married to Mrs. Rebecca Uyo Abutu Sam-Otene. A lover of children, he has seven (7): five (5) biological children and two (2) adopted children.
