Dr. Shankland

Throughout his life and career, temporomandibular disorder and craniofacial pain specialist Dr. Wesley Shankland has maintained involvement in a vast array of academic, professional, community, and personal endeavors, attaining a high degree of achievement in each of his pursuits. An Ohio native, Dr. Shankland graduated from Shawnee High School in Lima before enrolling at The Ohio State University, where he took part in the Honors Program in Oral Histology and Embryology, majored in biochemistry and zoology, and served in the United States Army Reserve. Receiving his B.S. in 1975, Dr. Shankland subsequently gained admission to The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, where he enriched his record of academic performance with such graduate student honors as the Carl O. Boucher Senior Student Award, as well as awards from the American Academy of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Association of Endodontists. Dr. Shankland earned his D.D.S. in 1978 and later accepted a position on the faculty at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, teaching a diverse range of topics over the next five years. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Shankland led a variety of important research projects, lectured at major professional conferences, and secured publication in several peer-reviewed scholarly journals and trade magazines. Dr. Shankland also returned to school in the 1990s, earning his M.S. in Human Anatomy from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Ph.D. in Human Anatomy from Summit University of Louisiana. The author of Face the Pain and TMJ: Its Many Faces, Dr. Shankland diagnoses and treats patients at his Westerville, Ohio-based practice, TMJ & Facial Pain Center. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological and Orthopaedic Dental Medicine and Surgery, the American Academy of Pain Management, and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain (AACP). Additionally, he sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Craniomandibular Practice and teaches in the AACP Institute. When not working, Dr. Shankland enjoys a wide range of recreational, civic, and spiritual activities. He maintains affiliation with The Archeological Society of Ohio, National Model Railroad Association, Central Ohio N-Trak, Fostoria Rail Preservation Society, and The Church Next Door. An avid martial artist as well, Dr. Shankland teaches at Cleveland’s Universal Martial Arts Academy and holds a 1st Degree Brown Belt in Shō
