Dr. Vincenzo Giordano
Consultant Cardiothoracic and Aortic Surgeon in Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
Dr. Vincenzo Giordano is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon specializing in aortic surgery at NHS Lothian Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since 2018, he has served as the Cardiothoracic Lead for the National Service of Complex Aortic Surgery in Scotland, where he has developed significant expertise in the medical and surgical management of aortic conditions.
Dr. Giordano began his professional journey in 2011 after moving to the UK, joining the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. While there, he gained valuable experience working on complex adult cardiothoracic surgical procedures and refining his skills in managing critically ill patients. He also completed the Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) certification. In 2012, he moved to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a Specialty Doctor, where he took on responsibility for elective and emergency surgeries while also focusing on his cardiac and aortic surgery research. This role allowed him to enhance his mentoring abilities and contribute to multidisciplinary discussions on mortality and morbidity.
By 2015, he had been appointed a Locum Consultant in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Infirmary. In this capacity, he began performing surgeries independently, including minimally invasive procedures. After securing a permanent consultant position in 2017, he has performed over 1900 cardiac and aortic surgeries, averaging more than 200 cases annually. His wide-ranging surgical expertise includes total arterial myocardial revascularisation, ECMO implantation, thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, and valve surgery. Additionally, he plays a key role in the Scottish National Thoraco-Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Complex Aortic Service, providing specialized care for patients with complex aortic conditions.
In 2020, Dr. Vincenzo introduced a new port-access approach for aortic valve replacement via a mini right anterior thoracotomy, making his institution the only one in Scotland to adopt this technique. He has also been actively involved in the national TAVI program since 2012, overseeing the creation of surgical access for TAVI procedures and leading a Quality Improvement Programme within his department.
