Virginia Cowen
Virginia Cowen, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Dance at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, New York, holds numerous professional licenses and certifications in her field. After earning her doctorate at Arizona State University, Virginia Cowen relocated in 2005 to teach in New York, where she had previously completed a Master’s degree at Columbia University. Virginia Cowen’s credentials include certifications as a strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association; a health and fitness instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine; and a personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise. She also serves as a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance and has received certification as a Pilates instructor from the PhysicalMind Institute. The National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) has certified Virginia Cowen as a massage therapist, and she is a licensed massage therapist in the state of New York. As an instructor at the two-year Queensborough Community College, an extension of The City University of New York, Virginia Cowen has instructed students in kinesiology, myology, pathology, the foundations of therapeutic massage, Shiatsu and other Eastern massage techniques, and massage practicums. She also taught instructional competency labs in flexibility, cardiorespiratory exercise, and yoga while at Arizona State University and taught core conditioning, yoga, and Pilates mat work at Mesa Community College in Arizona. Virginia Cowen belongs to numerous service organizations, including the Yoga Alliance, a national, non-profit registry of yoga teachers, and the Northeast Popular Culture Association. In 2009 and 2010, she acted as a program mentor for a research initiative for minority students through the National Institutes of Health Bridges to the Baccalaureate. In 2010, Virginia Cowen chaired the Library Committee of the Academic Senate for Queensborough Community College, having played an active role on the Committee since 2006. In addition, she has served in several positions, including chairperson, for the NCBTMB, the independent, private, non-profit credentialing association that certified her as massage therapist. A resident of Bergen County, New Jersey, Virginia Cowen also maintains a private practice in massage therapy and works as a personal trainer and yoga and Pilates instructor. A published
