Dr Yusof Mutahar (MBBS, FRACGP) is an Australian medical doctor, author, and theologian whose work sits at the meeting point of science, faith, and intellectual history. A graduate of the University of Western Australia and a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, he is widely recognised for integrating a modern medical career with Islamic scholarship.

Dr Mutahar has authored several specialist medical texts for clinicians and students. These include ECG Simplified, a practical guide to interpreting electrocardiograms; Secondary Causes of Hypertension in General Practice, which outlines a structured evaluation of uncommon hypertensive disorders; and An Approach to Hypercalcaemia in General Practice, a concise clinical handbook on the investigation and management of elevated calcium levels. His medical writings reflect a commitment to presenting complex subjects in a clear, accessible, and clinically useful manner.

Dr Yusof Mutahar pursued formal and extensive study in the classical Islamic sciences, specialising in Qur’anic Exegesis (Tafsīr), Ḥanafī Jurisprudence, Māturīdī Theology, Classical Arabic, Islamic Intellectual History, and Spirituality (Taṣawwuf). He is pursuing a PhD in Islamic studies

A major focus of his scholarly life is a prestigious, multi-volume English translation of Tafsir al-Maturidi (Ta’wilat Ahl al-Sunnah). This monumental commentary—authored over a millennium ago by the renowned theologian Imām Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī—stands as one of the foundational texts of orthodox Islamic creed and classical rational theology. Dr Mutahar’s translation presents each Qur’ānic verse in Arabic followed by a faithful, elegantly crafted English exposition that preserves the precision, nuance, and depth of Māturīdī’s original insights. The project is expected to exceed 20,000 pages upon completion, making it one of the largest continuous Qur’anic commentary undertakings in the English language by a single author. His complementary work, Imam Maturidi: Architect of Islamic Creed, examines the life, methodology, and enduring influence of Imām al-Māturīdī and the development of the theological school associated with his thought.

His work, Imam Abu Hanifah: The Master of Qiyasrepresents a sustained study of Ḥanafī jurisprudential method and legal reasoning. Building on his earlier biography, Father of the Inkpot: Imam Abu Hanifa – The Greatest Imam (2024), the book engages advanced themes in uṣūl al-fiqh and examines the application of classical legal methodology to contemporary issues.

Dr Mutahar holds an authentic ijāzah (scholarly authorization) in the Ḥanafī–Māturīdī tradition, transmitted through an unbroken chain (silsilah) tracing from his teachers back to Imām Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī, to Imām Abū Ḥanīfah, and ultimately to the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. This ijāzah grounds him within centuries of orthodox Islamic scholarship in jurisprudence (fiqh) and creed (ʿaqīdah), authorising him to teach, transmit, and interpret within that lineage. Through this living chain of knowledge, he continues his extensive work on the English translation and commentary of Tafsīr al-Māturīdī, ensuring the preservation of its theological clarity and intellectual rigour for contemporary readers.

Beyond Qur’anic exegesis and medical literature, Dr Mutahar has written widely on Islamic history, theology, spirituality, and biography. His works include studies on the virtues of the Rightly Guided Caliphs—Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, and the noble grandsons Hasan and Husayn—alongside Where Is Allah? A Refutation of Anthropomorphism: The Creed of Ahlus Sunnah, and Father of the Inkpot: Imām Abū Ḥanīfah, a biography of the great jurist. His writings aim to bring classical Islamic knowledge to modern audiences while maintaining fidelity to traditional scholarship. Dr Yusof Mutahar is a descendant of the first Caliph, Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq, and the nephew of renowned Islamic scholar Professor Mohammad Hashim Kamali, who also serves as his mentor.

Outside his academic and medical endeavours, Dr Mutahar is an accomplished martial artist and former national-level judo competitor. He won a gold medal in the 2017 judo Australian nationals. Furthermore he represented Australia in the u81kg weight division.

Dr Yusof Mutahar mentors medical students and junior doctors, and he speaks widely on preventive health, medical education, and the enduring relevance of classical Islamic thought in contemporary society.
