Anika Thrower PhD,MPH

Professor in New York

A Pittsburgh Pennsylvania native, Dr. Anika Thrower obtained her undergraduate degree in nutrition from Norfolk State University. Later she was awarded both a master’s and PhD in public health from Walden University. She has worked in various unde-served populations around the United States, to include a Native American Indian community.

Her passion for improving peoples respective health outcomes has led her to become a nutrition expert within government-funded Women, Infant and Children programs (WIC). She has 14 years of expertise in utilizing science-based health models to foster healthy lifestyle behaviors. Endorsed by the Connecticut Department of Public Health and both the first health care center (and WIC program) in the State of Connecticut she was a principle investigator. Within this role she critically examined health behaviors (physical activity and fruit & vegetable consumption) along with other variables that potentially predicted unhealthy weight statuses in women utilizing a WIC program.

As a thought leader, she has published several scholarly peer-reviewed articles around health-based practices within the International Journal of Childbirth Education assessing the health needs of the underrepresented. She is a higher education advocate of first generation minority college students. To that end, she self-published her first book entitled "The Art of Dominating the Winner's Circle for the College-Minded Student" in the spring of 2018.

Currently, Dr. Thrower is an Assistant Professor at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in NYC.
