Since 1985 Steve has devoted most of his time working or volunteering in the voluntary and community sector in Bradford, Kirklees and since 1989 in Calderdale.

Steve joined the Community Foundation for Calderdale – an independent grant making charity in January 2000. Within 18 months he had secured a major Government grant making programme that more than quadrupled grant making and saw a significant increase in staff numbers. This was recognised with a promotion to Assistant Director in 2001 and then to Chief Executive Officer in April 2004. From 2004 to present day the Foundation’s invested funds have grown from £2 million to £8 million and grant making in the same period to £12 million. Out of 58 community foundations in the UK Calderdale has never been out of the top 15 achievers and is now recognised as a Beacon Foundation for Local Giving.
