Dan Verbin
Canada
My name is Dan Verbin. I am a journalist and editor who has dabbled in screenwriting. I am currently taking the Technical Writer program from Ottawa’s Algonquin College. It’s an online program. I enrolled in the program because I wanted to expand my career opportunities while focusing on my passion for writing and research. I have really enjoyed it so far and I am looking forward to an exciting career in technical writing.
I also have an Honours BA in psychology which I have not really used, although I think a psychology degree is applicable in many facets of everyday life.
My journalism career was mostly spent with smaller publications. I was the Editor of a weekly community newspaper. I was the News Editor of a small news and culture website. I wrote freelance articles for magazines. I did some business and trade magazine writing.
I also did some screenwriting, which was fun but did not really lead anywhere. The most interesting experience I had as a screenwriter was when I worked on very early sample scenes for a potential movie or television version of a Canadian short cartoon called The Nut Job. This was around 2008/2009 and the project seemed to have fallen by the wayside due to the economic upheavals at the time. Earlier this year, I was pleasantly surprised to see that The Nut Job feature film was finally released. Even though I had nothing to do with this version of the cartoon, it’s still really cool that I worked on an early adaptation. I have yet to see it but I am going to watch it one of these days.
