Fractional CIO, Alchemy

Alchemy Consulting Services is the vehicle for my fractional CIO and AI transformation work. The name is deliberate — the ancient alchemists turned base metals into gold, which is precisely what good technology leadership does: it takes raw ambition and turns it into something genuinely valuable.

My career has spanned the largest and most complex technology environments in the world — WPP, Heathrow Airport, BSI, Arup, and the BBC — where I have built global platforms, led enterprise transformation, and delivered programmes at a scale most consultants only advise on. Most recently I built WPP Open, the world's first agentic AI operating platform for end-to-end marketing, deployed to 70,000 practitioners across 110 countries and generating $40m in documented commercial value in its first year.

Now I work fractionally — bringing that same enterprise-grade capability to a small number of organisations at a time, as their part-time CIO, AI transformation lead, or technology adviser. It's the most rewarding work of my career.

Board Director & Trustee, Article 19

Article 19 monitors threats to free expression around the globe; lobbies governments to adopt laws that conform to international standards of freedom of expression; and drafts legal standards that strengthen media, public broadcasting, free expression, and access to government-held information.

As a Board Trustee, my role includes making sure the charity (a) has the money it needs, (b) spends its money sensibly, on the activities it was raised for, (c) follows the law, including preparing reports & accounts to send to the Charity Commission, and (d) doesn’t break the rules in its governing document. I serve on the International Board and the Finance & General Purposes Committee.

Personal Life

I live with my wife & youngest son in Esher, Surrey and (from time to time) our holiday home in Provence. My two older children are now both working in London too. My interests include rugby (in past times as a coach & ref) and writing (three published books).
