Eduardo Coutinho

Eduardo Coutinho (1980, Portugal) received his degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering in 2003 from the University of Porto (Portugal), where he specialized in computational modelling and multi-agent systems. Following his strong interesting in emotions and music, Coutinho engaged in a doctoral degree at the School of Computing and Mathematics from the University of Plymouth (UK). In 2008, he was awarded his Ph.D. with a thesis entitled Computational and Psycho-Physiological Investigations of Musical Emotions. In it, Coutinho explored the link between emotional responses to music, low-level psychoacoustic features and self-perception of physiological activation. Since then, Coutinho has been researching in the interdisciplinary field of Music Psychology, combining Experimental Psychology, Affective Sciences and Computer Sciences in the study of the expression and induction of emotions with speech and music. In his current research he investigates the types of emotions induced by music, the psychophysiological mechanisms whereby emotions are induced through music, the role of the listening context in emotion induction through music, and the link between low-level acoustic descriptors and the expression and perception of emotion in naturally occurring sounds, speech and music. In parallel with his research, Coutinho develops some projects in the areas of composition and interactive art.
