East Hawai'i Coalition
East Hawai'i (Big Island)
Purpose
The purpose of the East Hawai'i Coalition is to unite people of faith to stand for righteousness in our community. We will do this by...
- Finding and campaigning for legislators that share our moral values (specifically in the issues of Same-sex marriage, Abortion, Gambling, Marijuana, and Physician assisted suicide- all which we are against).
- Getting involved in the community and schools. Right now we are doing this through the organiation PEACE Hawai'i (Public Education Advocates for Christian Equity).
The way that we campaign and serve in the community will reflect the Christian values that we represent.
Organization
Our coalition is divided up by the 4 House Districts in East Hawai'i. There are also other coalitions similar to ours across the State of Hawai'i. We are not a legal or official organization, but just a group of people of faith that have come together and call ourselves the East Hawai'i Coalition.
History
The East Hawai'i Coalition was formed in November 2013 shortly after the Special Legislative session convened legalizing Same-sex marriage despite the overwhelming petition from the people of Hawai'i to not pass the bill. We as people of faith realized that we were involved in the process too late and that the position where we could have made a difference was when we elected our legislators -the ones who had the power to pass the law.
During the Special Legislative session most of those involved had attended a presentation by Phil Lees, a family advocate speaker from Canada where same-sex marriage was legalized in 2003. He explained the consequences in education if same-sex marriage is legalized. The EHC worked with Transformation Hawai'i to bring Phil Lees back here to the Big Island in Feb 2014. This time he presented his organization PEACE which has a 3 step plan to help protect our children from the false precepts that will be coming into our schools (and are already in our schools). This 3 step process includes 1) Intercessory prayer for each of the schools and principals across the state of hawai'i 2) Encouraging people of faith to be contributing members of the school community. 3) PEACE parent communication letters which let schools know sensitive issues which families of faith wish to be notified about before it is taught.
