Elizabeth Crowe-Joong, Ph.D., Reiki Master

Hummelstown, PA

  • My academic pursuits encompass a keen interest in health and the quality of life. I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology with an emphasis on the mind-body connection. My Master’s thesis in Educational Psychology examined “Stress and Clinical Instruction” and my Ph.D. dissertation topic in Medical Sociology investigated the components that influence the patient-doctor relationship.

In 2003 I worked part-time as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities at Penn State’s College of Medicine (COM) for six years where I taught medical students, co-chaired an Integrative Medicine Group, ran a Palliative Care support group that included training others to visit the dying and their families, as well as volunteered as a bereavement support person. Throughout this time I wrote and published some poetry (including one published in JAMA). Lately I am a regular guest speaker on meditation by the Contemplative Medicine as well as Integrative Medicine fourth year medical school selectives.

Towards the end of 2009, I chose to dedicate more time to my personal writing projects and learning more about the science and contemporary philosophies of spirituality. I regularly attend relevant scholarly seminars and conferences that focus on subtle energy, energy medicine, meditation, and integral theory. I began attending many experiential meditation workshops and retreats. It is here where the value of a contemplative practice became increasingly a part of my own healthy lifestyle.

I am a certified Reiki Master practitioner and am a meditation educator. I am presently attending a two-year certification program offered by the Institute for Applied Meditation on the Heart University (IAM-U - click here to visit their website).
