Ed Lum

As a boy, Ed loved playing board games, win or lose. He seemed to be drawn to the simple fate of the dice.

Clenching his tiny fist around the snake-eyed cube, he readies himself for the toss, hoping for a 6. The 6 would bring untold riches and certain victory, while a 5 would require him to relinquish his fortune and suffer a terrible loss. With a hope and a prayer, his arm angles precisely at 45 degrees, he launches the cube. It rambles unthinkably down the board, coming to a hard stop. The hard stop is final. No ambiguity, no uncertainty, no replays, no redo's. It's a 5.

That's the nature of the dice: always giving you a chance to win, always giving you a chance to lose. Often, the odds are not in your favour, so persevere. The magic in winning brilliantly one day is often found in losing brilliantly - over and over again.
