Edward Rutledge
Ed Rutledge, MD, laid the foundations for his career in orthopedic surgery at a number of respected academic institutions. After studying aeronautical engineering at Purdue University, he went on to earn his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Indiana University. In 1971, he entered Indiana University School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine in 1975. After completing a year-long internship in internal medicine at Bronson Methodist Hospital and Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, he decided to specialize in orthopedic surgery.
From 1976 to 1980, he completed a residency in the field. After finishing his medical training, he was in private practice until 1989 in Indiana. He then completed a year long fellowship in orthopedic trauma at Vanderbilt University. Following that he then served as a volunteer training instructor for orthopedic residents at the Afghan Trauma Hospital in the refugee camps outside Peshawar Pakistan. He then joined the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center (now Regions Hospital), a trauma center in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he served as staff member and instructor in trauma surgery.
In 1996 Ed was invited to work at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. HCMC is highly regarded as a leader in orthopedic trauma, as a teaching institution, and as a research center. He remained there until 2005 when he sustained a traumatic head injury and could no longer practice surgery. He was in semi-retirement for the next couple of years. In 2008 to 2010 he served as a volunteer at the VA hospital in Mnpls, Mn. working in the orthopedic department and helping with resident training. In 2010 he joined Physicians Group, LLC and now helps provide for the diagnosis and treatment of auto accident victims.
Ed is a member of the Orthopedic Trauma Association, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society, the Vanderbilt Orthopedic Society, and the Minnesota Orthopedic Association, and the Ramsey County Medical Society.
