Edward Bear Miller
Washington, D.C.
Edward “Bear” Miller was born and raised in the District of Columbia. He paints natural landscapes, urban-industrial spaces, figures, and portraits on site to the extent he reasonably can, but he also works in his studio from photos, previous studies, and his imagination. His B.A. is in History from Reed College (’93) and he earned a Master’s in Teaching Social Studies from Lewis & Clark College before teaching History, English, and Spanish for twelve years in Washington State, Quito, Ecuador, and in DC-area high schools. Ed started painting in oils at St. Albans School (under Sandy Larson), continued painting throughout his college career (under Michael Knutson), apprenticed for six months on Guemes Island, WA with Pacific Northwest artist Philip McCracken in 1994, and has been mentored by painter Robert Stark of Pennsylvania for the past ten years. He enjoyed several summers of success as an Adirondack landscape painter before deciding to devote himself to painting full-time in 2009. He is represented by the Foundry Gallery in DC, the Corscaden Barn of Art in Upstate New York, and the Octavia Art Gallery in New Orleans.
